Project Update: Senegal - It's Nursery Season!!
Greendimes.com's first planting area in Senegal
Greendimes' first reforestation area is located three miles east of the town of Kaffrine in central Senegal. This 23-hectare area was reforested with over 20,000 new trees in partnership with the local forestry department. The program coordinator, Omar Ndao (left), is working hard to include 25 villages in the next tree planting campaign.
Building on success in the region
Marked with circle on the map of Senegal, West Africa, the program in Kaffrine has been a growing quickly since 2001. With the support of Greendimes, communities in this region will be able to plant as many as a quarter of a million new trees this year.
Agroforestry: The solution for dryland Africa
An important aspect of this program is training communities in agroforestry: a land use system that integrates trees into agricultural systems. In Senegal, windbreaks, alleycropping, and living fences are all helping communities to invest in the long-term improvement of their agricultural lands while supporting families with non-timber, marketable products.
Women's groups help prepare 100,000 seedlings
It's nursery season. Volunteers and women's groups throughout the department, including this one here in Kaffrine, are assisting with nursery preparation.
Youth group lends a hand
Girls and boys youth groups are also helping out in the nurseries. Mixing soils, filling nursery sacks and seeding will require the participation of everyone.
The promise of a fruitful future
Ibrahima Ndao, the little brother of TREES' Senegal Program Coordinator, enjoys helping out in the tree nurseries. When asked which tree he likes best, "mango" he replied immediately, "and cashews are a close second."
